14 ways to make money from just one article

By Teresa Schultz

I'm doing it and so can you

I've recently started making some extra income by writing just one article, then using a variety of methods that bring in some extra cash, all related to just that one article. Each time I want to do it again, I write a new article and do it all over again. I wish I had the time to write ten articles a day, and use the methods ten times a day.

Why do I wish I had more time? I know it's still "early days," but I see great potential for this idea. Although the amounts I'm earning are very small, it seems to me that if I spend more time doing it more often, I could possibly make a fulltime income from writing articles and making money from them in different ways.

Why don't I have more time? Because the earnings are small (in return for not spending much time on it), and I don't have enough money stashed away to last me 6 or more months (while I devote more time to my strategy,) I have to also fit in quicker methods of making money from home - I'm a freelancer working from home, and if I don't work, I don't earn.

What is it that I'm doing?

I'm republishing articles on various sites, and I'm linking to them (bookmarking them) on various sites.

What are the 14 different ways I can earn money from just one article?

I write an original fresh unique article of at least 400 words and submit it to either Factoidz or Triond. I do not submit the same article to both sites as neither site accepts previously published content. I'm using Factoidz more at the moment, but plan to get back to using Triond again soon, too. Both Factoidz and Triond allow you to republish your articles elsewhere after they first appear on the site. It's a bit confusing trying to work out if the Factoidz time period is 3 days or 30 days later that one can republish articles elsewhere, so to be on the safe side, it's best to just go with the 30 days later rule. I would use the same time period rule for Triond. 1st way to make money: from a share in revenue on Factoidz due to page views of my articles. 2nd way to make money: just from activity on Factoidz such as uploading new articles or answering questions in the forums

Once the 30 day time period is up, I republish the exact same article on Helium, on Constant Content offering usage rights only, and on one of my own sites or blogs. Sometimes I may change the title a bit, and possibly a line or two, but not always.

3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th ways to make money: On Helium I can earn from a share in ad revenue like on Factoidz, and also if somebody wants to buy my articles on Helium (usage rights only.) I can also earn extra if I am the first to write an article to an empty title, or am one of the first five to write an article to a title. Those last two methods are only possible if I have a good writer's score and good percentage of my articles in the competitive titles (3 or more articles have been written to a specific title.)

7th way to make money: I can sell my previously published articles on Constant Content, if I am not offering fullrights or unique rights. If my article has already been published elsewhere, I must offer only usage rights.

8th, 9th and 10th ways to make money: When I republish the same articles to one of my own sites or blogs, I can earn from Adsense clicks, from affiliate or referral links and banners, and from somebody hiring me for a service I offer, or buying a product I sell (I could advertise this in the sidebars or elsewhere on the same pages as my articles.)

11th and 12th ways to make money: I bookmark one of the articles on RedGage and can earn a share in ad revenue from pageviews of my link and brief one line description. Although it doesn't happen often, I can also earn a bonus if my link and brief one line description is featured.

13th way to make money: I bookmark one of the articles on Xomba. There are Adsense ads next to my bookmark (the bookmark is a title, link, and minimum 50-word description.) - UPDATE (made January 2012) - Xomba no longer allows its members to bookmark their own articles - to replace this particilar method of making money from just one article, I suggest trying Best-Reviewer. Link to your article from Best-Reviewer while earning from Adsense on the same pages as your Best-Reviewer links.

14th way to make money: I can write a similar (but not identical) article on HubPages, and link to the main article. (HubPages does not accept previously published content, and does not approve of its members republishing HubPage articles (hubs) elsewhere later.) I can earn from the Adsense on my hubs.

Are there more than 14 ways I can earn money from the same article?

Yes, there are! I've just mentioned the 14 ways I'm currently using. Other ways could include bookmarking your articles on other sites that share ad revenue like Snipsly, She Told Me, and Best-Reviwer, or finding other sites that also accept previously published articles (like Bukisa) or buy usage rights only articles.

Am I worried about duplicate content penalties and plagiarism?

No, I'm not worried.

I ensure I use the same pen name (actually my real name) for all articles I write and sites I join.

The duplicate content penalty is a bit of a myth. It is possible that an article on your own site or blog, or on Helium, will not appear as high in search results as the first place you put it (like on Factoidz or Triond,) but you need to remember that the other articles will not be totally lost. Even if they're not appearing further down in search result lists, they still get seen by:

  • People visiting your site or blog because you are using other marketing methods too, or some of your articles on your site or blog are not republished elsewhere, and visitors link through to the ones on your site that are republished elsewhere by clicking the links to them (that you so nicely display on your site.)
  • Members of Helium
  • Members of bookmarking sites or social sites who click the link to them

Also, people who republish articles from places like EzineArticles, or who buy usage rights only articles from places like Constant Content, wouldn't be doing it if these duplicate content articles weren't helping them in any way, or if Google had penalised them.

Tips, Summary, and Earnings

I've been doing this for less than two months.

I'd like to be able to do it more often.

I spent hours and hours (over a few days) going through articles, reviews of sites, and site guidelines and TOS.

I've been earning the most from articles on my own sites and blogs for a while now (not a lot, but more than anywhere else.) My own sites are where I've had the most articles for over a year. I was wondering how to let those same articles earn me more income.

I cannot republish an article (that is first on my own site or blog) to Factoidz or Triond or HubPages, but I can republish it to Helium (but not their special marketplace,) or to Constant Content with usage rights only.

I can republish an article that was first on Factoidz or Triond to my own site or blog, to Helium, and to Constant Content (usage rights only.)

My free Blogger blogs don't get as many pageviews as my self-hosted websites or self-hosted WordPress blogs do - in fact, my Blogger blogs get a lot less views. I recommend getting a free WordPress theme (there are thousands to choose from) so that you only have to pay for hosting and domain registration, and so that your domain name is unique (it doesn't end in something.sameasthousandsmore.com but rather ends in something.com)

I must remember to use the same pen name (easy for me as I just use my real name.)

Even if the earnings coming in from other sites are less than the earnings coming in from my own sites, it's still more money per article than I had before.

In August I made about $80 using the methods described above. This was from very few articles posted elsewhere, and from my own sites and blogs, and I do also need to mention that about just over half of it was from my own sites and blogs where I have about 300 articles/pages and have had most of them there for over a year already.

As you can see from the paragraph above, the earnings are not high at all, but I'm excited about how much I could earn if I could manage to write ten new articles a day, and put each of them through this "ways to make money from just one article" strategy of mine.

I currently (late September 2010) have only 18 articles on Factoidz, and only 19 on Helium. I have not yet republished them all at all of the places or bookmarked them all at all of the places (places I mention in the above hub.) I'm proud of the earnings I've generated from the little bit of work I'd done so far, with regards to this strategy. If I had plenty of time for it, the sky is the limit!

I have less than 10 articles on Constant Content so far. One of them has sold twice (for $17 - I get $11 each time) over a period of two months. That same article was first on Factoidz and, on Factoidz, has earned me $1.92 (currently, so far.) I joined Helium on the 11th of this month, September 2010, and that same article has so far earned me $0.04 on Helium. I have not yet added this article to one of my own sites - so there's still more earning potential there. I have also not yet bookmarked it on too many bookmarking or social sites - still more earning potential there.

Through Adsense on my own sites and blogs (on a little over 300 pages and not counting my Blogger blogs as earnings there are almost non existant so far) I earn roughly $0.14 per article/page, on average, per month. Some pages are higher, some are much lower or will even go a whole month without even one Adsense click, but for the last 6 months or so, $0.14 has been pretty average per page/article.

I've been on Helium for 15 days, and have 19 articles there. Having earned $1.31 to date from pageviews' ad revenue share hopefully translates to about $0.14 per article on average per month (it's still early and pageviews may drop off later.)  My highest earning article in these 15 days has generated $0.27 for me, and my second highest has generated $0.18.  As long as my articles are there and continue to receive traffic, my earnings grow.  An ongoing residual income from work done just once.

But this means, that currently, my earnings on Helium are very similar to the earnings on my own sites or blogs. So why would I leave my article on just one place when I can earn double or more from it, by spreading it around a bit?

I hope my strategy helps those who would like to try it.

@ Barbara - thanks for the comment - will do so (write about my progress in a few weeks' time.) The first link in the first paragraph goes to the original article which may give a slightly different angle on the whole thing. (this hub forms the 14th way to make money from that article - although I have not yet covered all 14 ways for this particular article!) - it goes like that sometimes - for eg writing in first person is not the best thing to do on Factoidz or Constant Content - and I need to keep that in mind when starting a new article, but if I really want to write in first person, I do, and I just do SOME of the 14 ways, then - still better than just one article earning income from just one place. It is a bit time consuming too, and as said in the hub, I wish I had more time to spend on it - I've probably only put about 7 or 8 articles through the entire process, and am constantly trying to find the time to continue doing it with most of my articles already written on my own sites (but then not to Factoidz or Triond), and with new articles (starting on Factoidz OR Triond) - Putting one article through the process still takes less time than it takes me to write 2 or 3 fresh new articles though, so I'll continue doing this whenever I get the chance. During doing it, joining sites, reading STACKS etc, I've come across the odd other person dong this too. Makes sense to me to make one article work in more than just one way.

all of these work well to make money, and of course if you manage your time correctly, I'd add Squidoo to the list, but of course you will have to mange your time for all of these methods. Quick and reasonably simple. Bravo!

Teresa Schultz profile image

Teresa Schultz Hub Author 20 months ago

Thanks for the comment Rebecca - I've been thinking of adding Squidoo to the list too, as well as Bukisa, but as you say, I'll have to manage my time, and that seems to be the greatest problem right now - wishing there were more hours in a day, and that I could get by on less sleep!

Hi Teresa I was intrigued by your hub on making money 14 different ways. I have always been a little uneasy about republishing articles I have put on other sites. I have 150 unique articles outside of hubpages and now I'm thinking about publishing them on other sites. Thanks for the advice.

What great information! I must ask, though, what are bookmarks? This seems new to me.

Teresa Schultz profile image

Teresa Schultz Hub Author 15 months ago

Hi Ruth - thanks.

A bookmark is when you write a title and just a few words (a description of the article) on another site, separate from where your article is published. The bookmark includes a link to your main article. Hope that helps.

Ruth 15 months ago

Thank you for that. I'm still learning. I've linked my own articles to another site but I've never linked back. I'll have to experiment - unless you want to offer a clue ( ? )

Ruth 15 months ago

I think I neglected to hit the submit button on my last comment. Your input is wonderful help except I have never done that. I have linked my own article to another site but never the reverse. Want to offer a clue how it's done?

Teresa Schultz profile image

Teresa Schultz Hub Author 15 months ago

Hi Ruth

eg on facebook, on your profile, where it says "update status" or something like that, you type in a line or two about what your article is about, then you also type in the link to it - the full address starting with http://...... and that's it!

You can join sites like xomba, shetoldme, redgage, twitter etc and do the same there - except there it won't be on your profile like on facebook that you add the article description and link, it will be in a place that says something like "share a bookmark" or "write a new bookmark" or "add your link" or "leave a new tweet" or something like that.

Commenting on blogs that have articles with related content is also a good idea - when you fill in your name in the field for it, and your email address etc, when leaving a comment, there is also many times a field available where you fill in your blog or site address - your name then is a link that leads back to your site, where your articles are.

Hope that helps, and good luck with your Internet adventures.

Teresa Schultz profile image

Teresa Schultz Hub Author 15 months ago

ps - Ruth

try it here: when you leave a comment here, fill in the field where it says website address and your name will be linkable to where your articles are published. As long as decent comments have been left, and the site your name links to is a family friendly one, I allow the comment to appear here (with your name linking to your site)

anish92 profile image

anish92 14 months ago

I think you DO NOT earn from Xomba bookmarks. But not sure how it works since they changed their T & C.

Otherwise a very accurate and helpful article.

Wish Helium would start accepting Indian authors. Hearing so many good things about the site... :(

Voted up.

Teresa Schultz profile image

Teresa Schultz Hub Author 14 months ago

Hi Anish, thanks for the comment - yes, Xomba havew changed their rules. You used to be able to earn from Adsense on bookmarks and I think you still can (I'll check through Xomba soon on what they say about this) - what I do know about their new changes is that the bookmarks can no longer link to your own sites or blogs, or articles on writing sites - only to sites or content that is not written by you.

Regards Helium, I'm sorry they don't accept Indian authors - and I also no longer earn as much on Helium as I used to as they changed the way their upfront payments work. I do not submit my articles to their upfront payments section anymore, but I still enjoy earning from pageviews of my articles.

Your comment here has been helpful, thank you, in reminding me that I should check through my hubs from time to time to see if any need updating. Thank you.

Just bookmarked this article. Thanks for sharing these information. Learned some new things here. Just a question out if curiosity, if you don't mind. How many articles can you actually process everyday?

Teresa Schultz profile image

Teresa Schultz Hub Author 12 months ago

Hi Jubair - glad you learned something new, and thanks for the comment.

When you say "process" do you mean how many articles can I write everyday?

I'm not yet writing fulltime, so I certainly can't write as many articles as I would like to, but let's imagine, then, that I was writing fulltime, and that each article I wrote was between 400 and 700 words long.

Well, if it was a topic I already knew a lot about, and I didn't have to do any research at all, I guess I could manage anywhere between 5 and 10 in one day?

But, if spending a lot of time on research on the topic, and also doing some competitor analysis and keyword research for a better chance with SEO, I may manage just 2 or 3 in one day - but it's not the end of the world to manage just 2 or 3 in one day if that article is nicely optimized for traffic - or course also leaving some time over in the day for commenting on other articles or blogs, some backlinking efforts, and responding to comments too :) - it's all part of trying to be successful at writing online - it's certainly not just about writing as many articles as one can, or publishing as many articles as one can - 5 articles used wisely can earn a person a lot more money than 10 or even 20 articles that are not used wisely.

Hello Teresa,

Really sorry for the late reply. Many thanks for you response. I agree with you. Quality of the articles is more important than the quantity although to some extent quantity does matter in case of article marketing as it allows you to have more back links in the directories for your website. Anyway, it is really nice to know you.

I am a professional article writer and simply love to write. I have recently opened a new blog regarding article writing/marketing for the beginners. If you like, you can take a look at it and let me know what you think. Also, let me know if you have any blog that I can follow. :)

I am a freelance writer and working as per your guide in this article. Please visit my blog http://arecentarticle.blogspot.com/ and let me know if I am on the track!

Teresa Schultz profile image

Teresa Schultz Hub Author 9 months ago

Hi Dominic and thanks for the comment. I popped in at your blog and it seems by the links on the right hand side that you also belong to Triond, Wikinut and Bukisa.

I think Triond has rules that say your article should not be previously published elsewhere online (just like the rules of HubPages too,) but unlike HubPages, I think Triond allows you to republish your Triond articles elsewhere later, like on your blog, or on Bukisa perhaps (or even both.) I'm not sure how long you have to wait before publishing your Triond article elsewhere. For Factoidz it's 30 days (before yoy can publish your Factoridz article elsewhere.) Factoidz does not accept previously published articles, but once an original article of yours is on Factoidz, wait 30 days and publish it elsewhere. You cannot have the same article on both Factoidz and Triond as neither accept previously published articles. And any HubPages articles must be on only HubPages. It can get a bit tricky working it all out, but it's fun. Just be sure to often check the terms and conditions and rules of all sites, as sometime they change without notification that they have changed.

You can also use places like RedGage, SheToldMe and Best-Reviewer to bookmark your articles, and earn at the same time on those sites.

Good luck with your future writing adventures!

Quite amazing really. Where do you get the time for all this work? Oh, I wish I were as productive as you are. I had better get my finger out and get started seriously on this so called 'passive' way to earn from home. Great article.

Teresa Schultz profile image

Teresa Schultz Hub Author 9 months ago

lol. Mark, this is something I have hardly had the time to pursue as much as I would like to. Lack of available time to do all I want to totally freaks me out. I wish I only had to sleep 2 hours a night. I must say, though, that I can remember sometimes saying to my parents, when I was little, "I'm bored; I'm bored." I could never imagine being bored now, ever. There is just too much to do that I never seem to get to doing :)

This is a very useful article. Does Helium allow new writers? I would love to branch out and write other places. I have my own Wordpress blog but didn't get much there. Thanks again! Take care, Kelley

Teresa Schultz profile image

Teresa Schultz Hub Author 3 weeks ago

@ Kelley - thanks - I don't see why new writers would not be able to join Helium. I'm no longer interested in the site, since they changed their rules and payment structure some time ago already - I still have some articles there earning a pittance of a passive income - but these articles aren't even earning me anything right now as one has to rate other articles for your Helium articles to earn from pageviews. I haven't done enough rating in a while, so I'm currently earning nothing from Helium. I'm now pretty much writing only for my own sites, HunbPages, sometimes Factoidz (although haven't in a few months) and would also like to write some more for Constant Content. I am also no longer so keen on using the same article in more than one place - even though it is still allowed on some sites, one really has to be quite busy on those sites to get traffic to your articles (and they may not be so easily found in search results if they're duplicate content, so then one needs to be pretty busy on the sites for fellow members to notice your articles.

If I was to continue trying to make money from just one article in more than just one way, I'd probably post it to Factoidz, one of my own sites that already receives fair traffic a month later, and also perhaps to Constant Content (offering usage rights only), but that's about it (if I bother to spend some time on it again.) For now HubPages and my own sites keep me busy enough.
